Only available in French

Born on the banks of the Meuse, Dinant is deeply marked by almost two thousand years of history. Once the third largest city of the principality of Liege, its strategic position on the Meuse river led to it being besieged on numerous occasions and almost completely destroyed twice. Rebuilt after each disaster, Dinant, today facing its future, is confronted with important mutations of its urban fabric which will prefigure its face of tomorrow. Since the 19th century, its majestic natural setting and its wilderness have been a major tourist attraction for visitors seeking to discover the countryside. Its famous citadel, perched atop a high rocky cliff, seems to triumph over the collegiate church of Notre-Dame whose distinctive bulbous spire is emblematic of the city. Despite the disasters of the past and the prospect of major urban changes, the diversity of Dinant’s built heritage never ceases to amaze. Let’s hope that it can be passed on intact to future generations…
