Le Moyen Âge dans la bande dessinée
From March 27 to September 13, 2026, the MPMM invites you to step into its world! The exhibition “The Middle Ages in Comics” explores how medieval society has been—or is—depicted in contemporary comics. Without claiming to be exhaustive, it offers a fascinating overview of some 100 medieval-themed works from Belgium and France, ranging from “Prince Vaillant” in the 1930s to the current adaptation of “The Pillars of the Earth,” including publications from the magazines Spirou and Tintin dating back to the mid-20th century.
The exhibition was conceived in 2019 by Jacques Verstraeten, a medieval historian from Huy, in collaboration with Nicolas Stetenfeld, research associate at the Bibliothèque des Littératures d’Aventure (BiLA). In addition to informative content, it features a series of reproductions of panels from various comic books (“Le trône d’argile,” “Arnaud de Casteloup,” “Chevalier Ardent,” “Les compagnons du crépuscule,” “Isabelle,” and “Gardiens du Bierzo”).
At the MPMM, the exhibition is accompanied by a display of original panels by Belgian artists and illustrators Thierry Cayman, Jean-Claude Servais, and Marc-Renier.
From the Middle Ages approached with humor to those of our imagination, from stories brimming with stereotypes to those rooted in realism, (re)discover this fascinating period through the 9th art.
