The Iron Duke Barrier" themed walk
June 18, 1815: Napoleon 1st is defeated at the Battle of Waterloo. The map of Europe is redrawn, and our territories are incorporated into the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. Between 1817 and 1822, twenty-one strongholds were built across the new state, in anticipation of any French counter-attack. It was against this backdrop that the citadel of Namur was almost entirely rebuilt by the Dutch regime.
But did you know that it was the Duke of Wellington, the great victor of Waterloo, who was behind this project? Did you also know that most of the fortifications visible at the Namur citadel date back to Dutch times?
These are the themes that this walk will address, immersing you in the Dutch period as you discover the citadel of the “Iron Duke's Barrier”.
At the end of the walk, don't hesitate to discover the related exhibition.
Free access on Terra Nova's upper meadow.
