Coup d'éclat! For 17th-century portraits of Namur's elected representatives

In 1633, ten prominent figures contributed to the prosperity of the city of Namur. As exceptional reminders of their political commitment, the SAN Foundation holds two altarpiece panels and a third painting depicting them.

These group portraits were painted by Jean de La Bouverie I, a rare Namur painter whose name we have preserved. These 3 works are unique witnesses to the workings of the Namur Magistrate's Office in the 17th century. In memory of these men's actions on behalf of Namur and its inhabitants, it's now our turn to pay attention to their portraits, so that their memory can be passed on to posterity. To ensure their preservation, a vast restoration project is supported by the Fonds des Amis de la SAN, with an appeal to the generosity of citizens.

The Société archéologique de Namur, in partnership with the City of Namur and with the support of the Fonds Léon Courtin-Marcelle Bouché of the King Baudouin Foundation, invites you to rediscover the workings of the Magistrate of our beautiful city of Namur, and the personalities who have supported it, through a rich panorama of works and archival documents.

From 07 Feb. To 11 May.
